My Journey
The journey to motherhood should be a time of joy and anticipation, yet for many African American women, it is overshadowed by alarming disparities in maternal healthcare. Black women are disproportionately affected by pregnancy-related complications, with a maternal mortality rate that is two to three times higher than that of white women.
These disparities are not confined to any socioeconomic or educational boundaries, affecting Black women across all income and education levels.
My personal experiences and the stories of countless women in my community opened my eyes to these harsh realities. Witnessing the challenges faced by Black mothers during pregnancy and childbirth ignited a profound calling within me to become a source of support and advocacy.
I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Alternative Medicine from Everglades University, seeking to understand holistic approaches to health and wellness. This academic foundation led me to obtain certifications as a Yoni Breathing Instructor, Birth Assistant, Holistic Doula, and Ubuntu Birth Worker. Training with the Black Sisters Birth Academy® was particularly transformative, reinforcing my commitment to culturally sensitive care that honors and uplifts our heritage.
Research has shown that the presence of doulas can significantly improve birth outcomes, including reducing the likelihood of birth complications and low-birthweight babies.
By integrating emotional, physical, and informational support, doulas play a crucial role in bridging the gap in maternal healthcare disparities.
My journey to becoming a doula is deeply intertwined with a mission to combat these inequities. I am dedicated to providing comprehensive, culturally attuned support to expectant mothers, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and empowered throughout their birthing experience. Together, we can transform the narrative, fostering a future where every mother receives the respectful and equitable care she deserves.
